St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake

For those of you who just can't find that perfect Gooey Butter Cake recipe, here it is...and with a couple of twists if you're so inclined.

Ingredients:
Crust:
1/2 c butter (1 stick)
1 pkg. yellow cake mix
1 egg, beaten
Filling:
8 oz. (1 pkg) cream cheese, softened
2 eggs
16 oz. powdered sugar (1 sm box)

Directions:
Mix butter, cake mix and beaten egg. Press into a prepared 13" x 9" pan.  Mix cream cheese, eggs and powdered sugar. Pour into crust. Bake at 325 degrees for 45 minutes.

Options:
Chocolate Gooey Butter Cake:
Mix 2 tbl cocoa powder into crust and 2 tbl cocoa powder into filling. Add a layer of chocolate chips (I used mini-chips) between the crust and filling. Wow. Yum.

Caramel Gooey Butter Cake:
Prepare standard Gooey Butter Cake above.  After 20 minutes of baking, mix in semi-soft caramel (like the apple dipping kind or melted squares).  Drizzle the caramel in rows and then use a knife to swirl in the filling, taking care not to cut all the way down to or through the crust. Even more yum.
